PURE CULTURE AROUND ST. ENGLMAR

Late baroque beauties - the Benedictine abbey and monastery library in Metten

Metten Monastery was founded in 766, but in the 18th century the late Baroque and Rococo styles moved in. The church, library and banqueting hall in particular are magnificently decorated. The stucco, including the figures, was created by the Austrian Franz Josef Ignaz Holzinger and the frescoes by Innozenz Waräthi from what is now South Tyrol. A wonderful addition to your visit to Metten is the 5-hectare prelate garden. Adjacent to the monastery grounds and in the middle of the town, it revives the tradition of late Baroque pleasure gardens in Lower Bavarian monasteries. The combination of architecture, church culture and nature is irresistible.
